The tool in the image is Compactor, a GUI front end to the Windows compact.exe built-in tool to utilise NTFS filesystem compression.

Compactor (GUI for built-in win 10 transparent compression) works really well for games, often getting 0.30x-0.65x compression ratios, game updates only decompress and patch what they need and then you just have to rerun the tool to recompress them. depending on your CPU, some games even load faster.

It compresses quite well, at least.

You could always just use compactor on the game's installation folder to have a similar result, it has essentially 0 impact on the game's performance and is always an easy way to know when a game is not really compressed all that well (fun fact, Resident Evil 7 can be compressed to around 5GB)

  • Next gen compression is a big relief.
The only thing to wonder is what can compression do to CoD games, the last CoD I've ever played was the first one so of course I don't own the newer ones, but if anyone that does and has the time, consider running compactor on CoD's folder, this will use Windows 10's own compression system to save space, don't worry, performance overall isn't affected because the algorithm isn't very aggressive and can in fact reduce load times across the board, it can also sometimes be quite the drastic reduction in size (Resident Evil 7 can be compressed to about 5 GB as one of the most extreme cases), so if compactor does indeed create a significant compression then that means you should be making a lot of noise so that devs finally start making a smaller game because unfortunately all the compression compactor does is undone whenever an update is released and files are modified
  • Steam should add an option to compress/uncompress games if you want to save space but don't want to have to redownload the whole game
