The Fortigate itself has a PiHole VM on my homelab as primary DNS server. I'd like to have the flexibility to turn off (breaking) the homelab without having to worry about leaving my network without DNS, so I configured a secondary external server. However, it seems that the Fortigate alternates DNS queries between the two, bypassing the PiHole which is undesired. I found that this behavior cannot be changed, so I tried a workaround: Creating a virtual server with static load balancing, using the PiHole as active and external server as standby. I'm not sure if anyone ever had tried this, but I then configured the virtual IP as primary DNS on the Fortigate itself. Which obviously didn't work, hence this post.
