I highly recommend using a launcher, like the CDDA Launcher (which is not being updated anymore but still works well), or Catapult. These will not only launch the game, but will allow you to easily manage tilesets, soundpacks, save backups, etc.

I personally recommend Ultica which comes with all the recent builds and is decently complete, and when it comes to creatures the sprites do a better job of showing the size of the creatures than the other tilesets. UndeadPeople is also solid. For soundpacks I recommend Otopack for stable, or the CDDA soundpack for experimental. A lot of good advice has been given elsewhere here about the early game, so I'll instead mention this: https://nornagon.github.io/cdda-guide/. This site is a godsend, it pulls information directly from the game builds and can be set to specific game versions through a dropdown at the bottom. You can search for enemies here and see their stats, abilities, and drops. You can also search for items, see what they do, can be used to make and are made from, and where they can be found\what they can be dropped from. It also shows you what items have what qualities, and what books teach what skills, to what level, and what recipes they contain, as well as what recipes autolearn from certain skills. Basically this can answer 99% of your questions about items and skills. Beyond that I just recommend experimenting with things and character builds. The game is vast and open-ended, figure out what gameplay and challenges fit your playstyle, and ask more specific questions here or on the discord if you have em someone will probably answer eventually.
