I'm back with a new guide. This time, I worked on a complete starter guide for all first-time Steam Deck users. I've tried my best to cover all the basics and help you get going the moment you get your Deck. I plan to regularly update the post, so if I missed something, I'll get back to writing.

This page summarizes the projects mentioned and recommended in the original post on /r/SteamDeck

  • proton-ge-custom

Compatibility tool for Steam Play based on Wine and additional components

  • Since February Proton-GE has been renamed (explanation here). To avoid confusion, I think you should call it GE-Proton in your guide: it's with this name that it can be found in ProtonUp-Qt for example. By habit everybody keeps on calling it Proton-GE, it's quite confusing for a beginner who can think that Proton-GE and GE-Proton are 2 different things.

  • xone

Linux kernel driver for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S accessories

  • Yes, there are drivers for Linux, but it's not working on deck right out of the box https://github.com/medusalix/xone

  • InfluxDB

Power Real-Time Data Analytics at Scale. Get real-time insights from all types of time series data with InfluxDB. Ingest, query, and analyze billions of data points in real-time with unbounded cardinality.

  • HeroicBashLauncher

Directly launch any Epic Games Store and GOG game from anywhere without Heroic on Linux.

  • But for Heroic, afaik you need this, though I am still working on the guide and can't 100% confirm.

  • gemini-stream

Xbox Game Pass for PC streaming companion

  • Release page is here, and there's a demo video here. If you (or anyone) decide to check it out, I'd love to hear any feedback!

  • syncthing-android

    Wrapper of syncthing for Android.

  • Check out Syncthing. It's a privacy-friendly, open source file sharing program. You can install it on your PC and install the app on your steamdeck from the Discover store. You can add folders on your PC to share with your steamdeck, it works OTA, and it has granular options like 'receive only'/'send only' and archiving.

  • HeroicGamesLauncher

A games launcher for GOG, Amazon and Epic Games for Linux, Windows and macOS.

  • Also try Heroic Games Launcher. You can install it directly from the Steam Deck’s Desktop Store and it allows you to install and play games from your GOG.com and Epic Games Store library using a GUI.

NOTE: The number of mentions on this list indicates mentions on common posts plus user suggested alternatives. Hence, a higher number means a more popular project.
