I'm personally fond of https://k3os.io for my small to medium hobby and professional clusters. It comes with a lot the bells and whistles, but is also pretty minimum and just scales easily.
If you want go with "real" Kubernetes Cluster and you want to put your hands in setup/automation stuff i recommend Kubespray (an ansible playbook based on kubeadm)
For your homelab i highly reccomend K3s. I installed it on my RaspberryPi to learn Kubernetes basics.
I have created my own automated way of provisioning a simple k8s cluster using Vagrant and VirtualBox here: https://github.com/vancanhuit/vagrant-k8s.
