There is an interesting project like WebCord that tries to replicate all of Discord Desktop's features, but with up-to-date Electron and non-obfuscated native code — this way, discord can be security-audited the same way that a web browser is: that is, no need to trust the closed-source native code that discord bundles with, just have to trust the Chromium web sandbox and the minimal amount of node.js/electron code needed to get things like desktop notifications working.
