Differentiable augmentation. The authors of the paper Differentiable Augmentation for Data-Efficient GAN Training proposed this method to prevent the discriminator from overfitting on the real dataset, so this might not be as useful for VAEs - nonetheless I do wonder if data augmentation for the encoder might help it generalize better when there's limited training data.
