The AIML chatbot gives it some personality, although they're strange, canned responses, and it needs to be installed with pip to work properly. Voices sound really good now with mimic3, and a lot of skills can do interactive responses where it can ask follow up questions by reopening the mic. Aiml does this sometimes when it's being snarky.
There's https://github.com/lukalabs/cakechat which replika seems to be related to. Might be another angle to work.
And a skill for it! It's 4 years old and very little action on github, but I'll test it out for the team.
They recommend using https://github.com/microsoft/DialoGPT now, btw. That appears to be current and maintained, plus on a transformer (vs rnn only). Might be better long-term to migrate.
