I have settled on using yabridge (https://github.com/robbert-vdh/yabridge) as it allows plug ins to be accessed directly within Reaper as though they were Linux native.

Both Ardour and Reaper are great, however from my anecdotal experience, Reaper is much more stable. There's also a lot of community projects, a lot of which is FOSS, based around Reaper, such as reascripts and reapacks. Plenty of info, howtos and resources on the forum.
