In the rare cases that I've run into trouble as a user, it's typically been with Windows software I'm running through wine that's trying to force full-screen or some weird pop-up size parameters. Steam used to misbehave sometimes, but years ago (OMG it was 2013 I'm getting old) I referenced this issue thread and added lines in my i3 config file to tell i3 to let steam make some floating windows (I don't think you want your game to be floating, but perhaps it's helpful to show you how users handled Steam's poor behavior when it came to tiling window managers a while back)
If I had any wishlist items for a game like this in Linux, it would be command-line support, such as a way to control the game from the CLI, or perhaps obtain the status in the console. In the second case, it means I can write my own plugins for tools like conky, and then I can keep an eye on my village at the same time as my server monitors 😉
