I get that it has some nice features and that it is open source and self-hostable, but i think it has some serious problems too. Mostly privacy related issues, but also true decentralization issues. The matrix ecosystem isn't contained in one server program (home server and identity server are seperate, for example) and thus leads to centralization(because of default values being set to matrix.org) of whatever component gets neglected by self hosters.
rocket.chat using matrix now: https://matrix.org/blog/2022/05/30/welcoming-rocket-chat-to-matrix
My point is that the protocol is so complex that you can't know for sure whether you really aren't contacting a third party system. The article i linked showed for example that when you sign in to your account it tries to contact the identity server without ever letting you know. And the default one is matrix.org and if you have a cell phone number or email associated with your account, that gets sent.
