  • Software developer looking for a customer centric open source product to contribute to.
It's been almost 1.5 years since I started my job as a software developer. I am now looking forward to contributing to cool open source products. I am looking for suggestions on customer ended open source products (like and signal), but one's that don't compete with my company's products :P. Can you guys please suggest some products I can contribute to? I really want to attach myself to an open source project in long term and contribute whatever miniscule amount I can to make things easily available to the masses.

Been there. Many times already to file issues. Unfortunately I've had to use it for about 20 months now and it hasn't improved since. They don't care about their bugs like this one:
Well, just give it time to improve, the repository/project just updated 3 days ago, which means more is coming. Plus you can express your opinions and make an issue there:

  • [D] Virtual Machine Learning Conferences: The Good and the Bad
Ever since virtual conference started, I haven't been able to catch up with almost any of them. Especially as people get more senior, they don't need to bother with social events, they don't ever log in to or It's not necessary with their established networks. But if you're outside established circles or the Ivy League equivalents, you're even more fucked than before (outside, arguably, organized mentoring rounds that are more accessible because there aren't any travel/visa/cost issues).

I've found that they're especially useful, when integrated with Rocket.Chat which you can also self host

That way you have an experience that's a lot like Slack/Teams, with pretty good support for chat, reactions, file uploads, discussions, making quotes etc., while also being able to start video/audio calls with the press of a single button.

Of course, if that's too many platforms, Rocket.Chat also supports WebRTC, albeit the UX was a bit less stellar when i last tried it. Regardless, those are some very competent options which allow all the data to remain on your own servers.

  • Messenger/chat app recommendations? Trying to make a WCAG 2.1 AAA compliant online platform. | 2021-08-10
I am searching for some chat apps that are accessible and provide an easy experience for screen reader users. I've tested WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal and RocketChat using VoiceOver, NVDA and TalkBack. WhatsApp scored the highest for me. It seems functional, though not a great experience. For example, it wasn't clear when I received a new message whilst in the chat. However, at least it said something at that moment as not all of the others did that, also some of the buttons and menus weren't navigable or accessible at all via screen reader. We're currently using RocketChat because it is Open Source, meaning it should be possible for us to make changes to it.. However, that might take a lot of work. It came last in my rankings and it seems like the RocketChat team currently are not investing any effort into improving the accessibility despite tickets being raised and a long thread on their GitHub page.

Been a while since I tried Matrix but it didn't replicate the multiple channels of Discord well. is Open Source and incredibly close to Discord in features and User Experience.
  • We Switched to Mattermost | 2021-08-02
Hmm, based on what i've heard, Mattermost is indeed pretty popular software - it seems to have a whole bunch of integrations with other platforms, for example, GitLab!

That said, personally i use Rocket.Chat, which has been pretty easy to self host:

I'm sure that someone who has experience with both could drop by and share their experience, but if nothing else, it's at least nice to have these options to choose from.

Either way, i can definitely confirm that most of these platforms indeed are very well off on smaller VPSes, as long as you don't have too much data in them (think file uploads rather than just messages).

  • Salesforce Completes Acquisition of Slack | 2021-07-21
Well, there are plenty of open solutions that you can self host.

Personally, i find Rocket.Chat ( ) to be simple enough to set up in a Docker container and have running as a passable alternative to Slack/Discord. There are downloadable clients as well. The only real downside I've seen is somewhat bad support for calls because their WebRTC implementation is still new and integrating with Big blue button or whatever else they offered is hard.
