  • Bot stroke
Hahahaha... we had the same. Our server admin wanted to test jira and so... he wrote some weird scripts that post jira updates to a chat-room and messages as comment... well.. comments on a jira ticket are a update as well. he was like "looks good to me... don't need testing... " so it ended up on our life system.. roughly 9000 comments and mails later he noticed a unusual cpu and ram usage on the server. That was hilarious xD We all enterd the chat-room and spammed massages so the bot would escalate faster. Each new message started a new endless recursion. At some point the server has send around 320 mails/messages per minute XDDD
  • What to do every single day to become a better programmer than the previous day?
Being still a student, I haven't had the opportunity to be exposed to such problems, where I would have to write anything beyond just a basic implementation. I do contribute to open source projects sometime, like in p5.js and react native repo.
  • Pointless to switch? | 2021-04-21
Well, I then adapted. I now self host a server with an instance of and everyone in my wifes family joined almost immediately except for him. Funny though, whenever someone forgets a password or something they always get really embarrassed to ask me for help. I also self host bitwarden and offer to help them set this up, but no one has taken me up on it yet.

What about something like Rocket.Chat? (or Mattermost, and other slack-esque derivatives)?
  • Ask HN: Would issue “bounties” make contributing to open source more appealing? | 2021-04-14
As someone who doesn't have enough technical expertise to build the features in open source projects an active donor to projects I support this kind of idea. I wouldn't call it a bounty though, more like gofundme for certain features. In some cases i'd pay $1000+ for some features to be built, and ideally others would join me.

Here's an example of a feature I'd want to financially contribute to that has a lot of support:

From my perspective it is the killer feature that enables me to switch from slack, saving my business hundreds of dollars a month. I can't just "hire a developer to do it" - the best deal would be if one of the existing contributors did it.

Also, some open sources struggle with funding and priorities - I'm sure there's features out there where the community would commit tens of thousands of dollars (Kickstarter style)

  • whatsapp replacement, easy to set up, that does not not downscale photos and videos
If you only want the messaging feature then you could also try Rocket chat (run on a raspberry and the main repo) or Zulip. They are both open source and easy to self-host (I am not sure how easy it is to setup Zulip but it is quite popular).
  • Prevent Insert Logs For a Specific Collection | 2021-03-31
We also found an old ticket related to this issue; looking at redactClientLogData as a potential stop gap while we troubleshoot performance issues. | 2021-03-31
We utilize Rocket.Chat for our instant-messaging needs, which in general has been working great for us. However, while troubleshooting a recent issue, we discovered that all messages are being logged in plain-text to mongo's logfile. Unfortunately, this doesn't appear to be something I have control over through the application itself...which has led me to seeing if we can configure MongoDB's logging behavior outside of the application.
  • Drop in Local Network Chat | 2021-03-31
Rocket Chat is nice and fairly simple to setup. Lots of other options here too:
  • Discord server
  • Microsoft in Talks to Buy Discord for More Than $10 Billion
Sounds like it might be time to spin up a server after all...
  • Self-hosted IM Server?
RocketChat or Mattermost are good options.
