You might want to look at grblHAL. It is the 32-bit evolution of Grbl. I make a 5 axis breakout board for it based on a Teensy 4.1. It supports step rates up to 400 kHz which allows you a lot of freedom in selecting microsteps and high speed rapids. All in with the Teensy, it costs about $65-70, depending on options. It is actively being developed with people adding features and porting to new processors (RaspBerry Pico is coming).
