I'm sorry I can't help more. I have a Mega-S but haven't had that issue. I recently went from David Ramiro's to Knutwurst's firmware (https://github.com/knutwurst/Marlin-2-0-x-Anycubic-i3-MEGA-S) and installed mosfets and TMC2208 drivers, and in all of these changes my E-Steps never went above 450.
