A Letter to D1sc0rd for not Supporting the Linux Desktop

This page summarizes the projects mentioned and recommended in the original post on reddit.com/r/linux

Our great sponsors
  • Appwrite - The Open Source Firebase alternative introduces iOS support
  • InfluxDB - Access the most powerful time series database as a service
  • Sonar - Write Clean JavaScript Code. Always.
  • Element

A glossy Matrix collaboration client for the web.

Well, it's something at least. It doesn't really have the same multiple-channels-per-server structure, being more similar to IRC, so I guess that would be harder to fit into. But people do seem to want to make it more Discord-like. See: https://github.com/vector-im/element-web/issues/7487 and https://github.com/vector-im/element-web/issues/3546

  • stencil

A toolchain for building scalable, enterprise-ready component systems on top of TypeScript and Web Component standards. Stencil components can be distributed natively to React, Angular, Vue, and traditional web developers from a single, framework-agnostic codebase.

because react-native is only reactlike. I may or may not want to stick with that. I think something like this is leading us towards a better and less UI lib specific approach. https://github.com/ionic-team/stencil/ . I don't think is 100% where we end up, but it is based on web components, so it's moving the entire ecosystem forward, not just a slice of it.

  • Appwrite

Appwrite - The Open Source Firebase alternative introduces iOS support . Appwrite is an open source backend server that helps you build native iOS applications much faster with realtime APIs for authentication, databases, files storage, cloud functions and much more!

  • Thanks for the suggestion! I just updated.

  • tauri

Build smaller, faster, and more secure desktop applications with a web frontend.

I would be happier to see more projects using Tauri instead of Electron. It's a lot easier to use web technologies to quickly iterate UI design, and makes it a better experience for those of us that are a bit challenged when it comes to creating a GUI.

  • FStar

    A Proof-oriented Programming Language

Technically you can but not because of any virtue of C itself...

  • com.discordapp.Discord

I'm confused, I can download the .DEB for any Debian based distro direct from their site, as a flatpak app (https://flathub.org/apps/details/com.discordapp.Discord), and as a SNAP app (https://snapcraft.io/discord).

  • cinny

    Yet another matrix client

To be honest I prefer the Discord UI to the standard Element app, but at least there are some alternative out there to make it look like it (ex: Cinny).

  • InfluxDB

Access the most powerful time series database as a service. Ingest, store, & analyze all types of time series data in a fully-managed, purpose-built database. Keep data forever with low-cost storage and superior data compression.

NOTE: The number of mentions on this list indicates mentions on common posts plus user suggested alternatives. Hence, a higher number means a more popular project.
