A black hole for Internet advertisements

I'm starting to configure some applications on my home server and am revisiting my existing network configuration before I get too deep. As a first step I'm investigating installing openvpn on my pihole server and have been rereading the getting-started guide on I noticed that as a prerequisite iptables are supposed to be configured as per these rules. Running `iptables --list` locally doesn't show any rules set up, and I'm not running either of the alternative applications listed on the doc. I've been running this pihole server for about a year for dns with unbound and dhcp. Have I screwed up pretty badly here? Do I need to go back and add those rules? Thanks.
