I use a custom-designed pre-commit hook to perform syntax checking (18 different languages supported so far!). It's a bit like the pre-commit project, but unlike that project it works on git blob output rather than the files on disk, so it works correctly when you do partial commits. It's also significantly smaller and simpler. Maybe I should release my commit hook one day...
