If want to access your files while on the road, look into ZeroTier, Wireguard or Nebula. SD-WAN software allows you to create a private network that spans the internet without having to deal with port forwarding or NAT.

Syncthing syncs the files locally. This doesn't work well if there are more files than disk space. I split space-hogging files (pix, vids) into separate folders and selectively sync important folders (docs). This allows you to manage files locally while still presenting them on a server.
Rclone can mount cloud storage locally. Rclone was built mainly to backup and transfer files in the cloud but has grown to be much more. SSHFS is simpler but not as versatile. Files can be exposed as a local directory.
