My firewall/router is the free Community Edition of pfSense running on a repurposed network appliance with 1 WAN and 5 LAN interfaces. Each LAN interface is a separate LAN subnet (e.g. 192.168.1.0/24, 192.168.2.0/24, etc.). I configured an OpenVPN VPN client (supported natively in pfSense) which creates a gateway. One subnet is configured to use only the VPN gateway for accessing the Internet. This subnet also has its own Pi-hole (installed in an LXC container) for DNS. Any system in this subnet is routed automatically through the VPN service and uses the VPN Pi-hole for DNS. There are only a few servers on this subnet and all have static IP configurations, so it is an easy solution. VLANs can be used for segmenting the network as well.
As a side note, I also use Pushover for alerts. The service is free for up to 10,000 messages per month, and the mobile app costs only $5 after a 30 day trial. The Arrs (at least Sonarr) has direct support for Pushover, so I receive an alert on my mobile phone when an episode is downloaded. It makes life easy.
