I do believe one can create the necessary installer package from their github repo. I do believe I read about someone else who wanted to repurpose a Fortigate firewall and was recommended to not do so because the nics are connected to ASICs.

pfSense is always my go to choice for routing. Excellent policy based routes and a large community of real deployments in complex routing situations. I have the lowly SG-1100 which is fine since I don't have a lot of inter-VLAN traffic and my internet is only 400mbps, but beware that you'll need something with considerably more power if you want gigabit line speed inter-VLAN routing. I personally designed my lab to not require inter-VLAN routing for any heavy traffic (since I trunk the VLANs to XCP-NG and let VMs sit on networks which are relevant to them), so SMB/NFS are never traversing the router.

  • RATtrap - Smart Internet Security Firewall - any good?
If you're tech savvy, look into running your own firewall/router with Untangle NG Firewall or PFSense. This will give you a ton of flexibility in what you block or allow. I use the $50/year Untangle Home Protect Basic subscription, but depending on your needs, the free version works well too.

My advice would be to download and install pfSense and see which works better for your use case. Many here may run both, but I would assume you will see most recommend pfSense. Just as you would see most recommend opnsense if you ask there.
