I use MonitorControl to control my external display’s brightness. The advantage over QuickShade is that it uses the actual brightness setting whereas QuickShade uses a software solution, i.e. it draws a black rectangle on top of everything. The advantage is that the latter also works for displays that MonitorControl doesn’t support.
I also just found Lunar, it does the hardware brightness thing with Apple/LG displays - https://lunar.fyi/
