You would fire up the game. But in a testing framework. I don't know which engine you're using, but in Godot that I'm working with, I am using GUT. When I want to test a feature, In GUT, I set up my "run" code to only load the areas of the game required to make this feature work. To test interaction of a card with enemies, I load the game board, the card, and the enemy. Then simulate my activating the card script and targeting the enemy.
