Darwin (MacOS's core Unix OS) is open source and you can go download it. You can also go here and see all of the open source software released on the various things they make, including all the GNU software they distribute within MacOS. So yes, Darwin is a derivative of BSD and runs of a lot of open source software and even a good amount of GNU software! The Core OS features, what makes an OS work, is all derived from an open source Unix and software.
The point being? They developed a pre-existing project pouring a lot of money on it. It is still open source, it's on their GitHub https://github.com/apple/cups , you can fork it. They started making open source stuff a long time ago.
