I recently got a Kasa smart plug, and without using the official app, use Python-Kasa to control it based on temperature in an adjacent room. In my case, the sensor is connected to a Arduino Nano 33 IOT, which hosts a local website with the temperature. If this device could run Python (it can run Circuit Python but that doesn't have asyncio, which Python-Kasa uses), it could do the logic and directly control the smart plug, but since it can't, I run the logic and Python-Kasa on another device.
