So many GTK Desktop Environments, yet so little Qt ones

This page summarizes the projects mentioned and recommended in the original post on /r/linux

Our great sponsors
  • InfluxDB - Power Real-Time Data Analytics at Scale
  • WorkOS - The modern identity platform for B2B SaaS
  • SaaSHub - Software Alternatives and Reviews
  • lumina

    Lumina Desktop Environment (by lumina-desktop)

  • There are some more qt ones but no clue how actively they are developed: Lumina, cutefish, Trinity...

  • QGnomePlatform

QPlatformTheme for a better Qt application inclusion in GNOME

  • InfluxDB

Power Real-Time Data Analytics at Scale. Get real-time insights from all types of time series data with InfluxDB. Ingest, query, and analyze billions of data points in real-time with unbounded cardinality.

  • pcmanfm

Extremely fast and lightweight file manager

  • That's a stretch. One former LXDE contributor, LStranger, wanted to continue the GTK version. The entire remaining developer team (including the LXDE founder PCMan) was like "whatever floats your boat, man" and decided to split up the projects in a friendly manner. But let's be honest here: Barely anything happens at LXDE any longer. Just look at the core component, PCManFM that is both the file manager and the desktop shell: https://github.com/lxde/pcmanfm/commits/master

  • nextspace

    NeXTSTEP-like desktop environment for Linux

  • GNUstep. There have been attempts at a GNUstep-based DE (e.g. Étoilé, Backbone). NEXTSPACE looked promising, but development seems to have slowed in the last year or so. GNUstep of course uses Objective-C, since it's a clone of NeXTSTEP/OpenStep, and that could be a bit of a hurdle for Linux developers.

  • shell

:shell: Convergent shell for desktops, phones and tables built with QtQuick, Wayland and Material Design (by lirios)

  • There is also https://github.com/lirios/shell

  • WorkOS

The modern identity platform for B2B SaaS. The APIs are flexible and easy-to-use, supporting authentication, user identity, and complex enterprise features like SSO and SCIM provisioning.
