Flatpak has been there for many years, but Flathub made it popular and distro's support is good. And you can also pack wine applications and games using flatpak-wine. https://github.com/fastrizwaan/flatpak-wine
Some games do have problems with it (see here for a list of tested games), and currently Valve's build of Proton 5.13 doesn't work due to double sandboxing basically (see here for more about it), but there is the community build variant specifically for Flatpak if you do need 5.13 anyway, and none of the games I play personally have problems with Flatpak specifically.
