  • tdesktop

    Telegram Desktop messaging app

  • Nothing new. Convenience of cloud sync/storage comes with question how data stored. Everything is based now on reputation now. If telegram leak any byte of data users will flee from it next second. So far there were no evidence of poor data management. More over there are a lot of government oppositions using telegram including as you mentioned before in Russia. Telegram doesn’t have anything to do with Russian government. 1. They tried to ban it for two years 2. Durov flee Russia after FSB forces him to sell his business VK.com 3. Telegram haven’t even been translated to Russian for 5 years. 4. There is still money reward on proof decrypting Telegram messaging. 5. Durov is super weird in a good way. Signal is great replacement to WhatsApp but Telegram offers much more. For me it’s real-time source of news which are censored in my country under the government. ...and memes. Not talking about voice/video calls and audio chats. If you want end to end encryption that feature called secret chat in Telegram. And yes Telegram is open source https://github.com/telegramdesktop/tdesktop you can see how secret chats are working. By the way Signal has same security problem with groups because of the nature of iOS/android notifications, handshake doesn’t happening up until you actually open the app, so in theory one can inject false notification with some text. P.S. I also have same concerns about cloud storage: how it’s encrypted, where it located. From Durov comments couple of years ago he mentioned that servers are located in different countries and data split between all of them, so if one node will be compromised the data there will be not recovered because it’s incomplete. It also kinda make sense that info isn’t public. Government of Russia, Iran, Pakistan, Syria would love to get hands on it and try to crack.

Tinfoil Chat - Onion-routed, endpoint secure messaging system

  • I'm not sure you understand this but I've studied cryptography for the past 10 years. I've authored a messaging system that's a lot more secure than Signal https://github.com/maqp/tfc and my work uses the EXACT same method for file multicasting (although in p2p setting). See the related function from onwards of https://github.com/maqp/tfc/blob/master/src/transmitter/packet.py#L278

NOTE: The number of mentions on this list indicates mentions on common posts plus user suggested alternatives. Hence, a higher number means a more popular project.
