This already exists, minus the speech recognition. Unfortunately natural-language recognition and processing takes more processing than a Raspberry Pi or similar low-power device can provide, which is why commercial products like the Echo offload it to online servers.
Cool. I'm kinda working on the same thing, but currently with only software, and a few limited functions. We (I have a small team of 4) use deep learning such as intent classification and a gpt-2 text generation model. Check out the GitHub repo. It ain't much, cuz we are all high schoolers, but I'm planning on some big upgrades when I have the time.
There are open-source speech recognition solutions, but you need to dedicate a more powerful processor to it.
