Try adding one or two of these to the adblock list urls (you have to do it manually in settings, but it can be done!). Solves the adblock issue for me. https://easylist.to/

Sampson explains why Brave has authomatic updates, to keep users safe. There is no option to easily disable them in the GUI at the moment. Something that will probably come "soon".
