  • earlyoom

earlyoom - Early OOM Daemon for Linux

  • nohang

A sophisticated low memory handler for Linux

  • I use nohang for years now with good experience. It is quite customizable so in my case the apps I use for videocalls get priority and less important apps get killed first. (Nothing as frustrating as being disconnected from a meeting because you ran out of memory.) It can also send notifications when it is at low memory, although I have to temper that a bit, GNOME UI can't seem to handle that many messages well. The Readme of nohang also lists other initiatives.

  • le9-patch

[PATCH] mm: Protect the working set under memory pressure to prevent thrashing, avoid high latency and prevent livelock in near-OOM conditions

  • You can use the Xanmod kernel on Debian and Ubuntu, which comes with the le9 patch that improves the system performance on low-memory conditions. It definitely improved performance on my machine on high ram consumption scenarions.

NOTE: The number of mentions on this list indicates mentions on common posts plus user suggested alternatives. Hence, a higher number means a more popular project.
