  NIOSDuino - Arduino framework running on NIOS II

I grab the SPI_transfer function from here: NIOS_DUINO SPI . Seems an old project but the function works perfect. The SPI component from Nios II have 4 wires (SCK, MISO, MOSI and SS) But also the component says that is 3-wire SPI so, what im missing? The datasheet of the sensor says that can work with 3 and 4-wire SPI. i have it connected as usual SPI, i need change something to make it 3-wire? and since i only reads FF's, i belive that im not even talking with the sensor, maybe is that SPI protocol issue?
