Considering the experience I get on +20 years, by a LONG margin, most performance problems I have seen are problems of data modeling, not the lack of understanding the internals (I start learning about that when I research for build a relational language).
Speaking of not hating past me: once upon a time, I wrote dmg-license. As you can see, I was…a bit obsessive about writing documentation for it. A year later, a very perplexing issue #5 came along, and I had forgotten how dmg-license works. Figuring that out would've been much harder if past me hadn't written all those docs. Present me was very fond of past me that day.
