PyFFI is a Python library for processing block structured files.

  • For terrain data, there is a new file format. This has not been fully reverse engineered yet, but the data size is definitely much larger than in the previous games like Skyrim or Fallout 4, where it is less than 100 MB, whereas Appalachia.btd is about 1.5 GB. From the file header, it looks like cell coordinates go from -100 to 100 in both dimensions (there is always a substantial amount of out of bounds area, Skyrim for example even has parts of Cyrodiil and Hammerfell mapped), and the total resolution is 25728x25728. 25728 is 128 times 201 (the X/Y size in cells), suggesting there is a 128x128 grid within a cell for the height map/topography features, while in the older games it is 32x32. Quadruple resolution = 16 times the landscape detail. This is not quite as certain as the map size, it could well be that something else is 16 times more detailed, but the statement being about the landscape at least seems plausible.
