I would be interested in the other SSL implementations:
- https://github.com/awslabs/s2n
- https://boringssl.googlesource.com/boringssl
- https://bearssl.org/
Are these subpar implementations or there are other reasons not to use these?
There's a GitHub issue[0] acting as an RFC open since April 2020. Looks like no conclusion has been reached but a quick skim of the thread reveals lots of sentiments similar to those expressed in TFA.

Just to add to your point.
Rustls is excellent, but has a Rust API and does not do I/O. Its a great alternative for Rust applications but, for C/C++ applications, the API wrappers are needed [1]
