I can't tell you much about the security aspect, but i really, really like the simplicity of File Browser. It was very easy and quick to set up, and is elegant and easy to use. It's one of my favorite self hosted services.
https://www.vaultproject.io/ you can use the opensource version and manage your internal CAs.
If you only need a file server, SFTPGo will be more than enough.
Perhaps you might find Rclone useful. There’s a lot of cool things that can be done with it (like virtually merging different sources together.). It can pretty much interface with every storage type, including Dropbox and Google Drive.
