there are LOTS of requests done to the mycroft backend, if you are on a slow network that can become significant, the resources of the backend host and the physical distance to where the backend is hosted can also be a factor, not much you can do about this, but would be interesting to compare with the mock-backend

for STT there is streaming support which should improve things, google cloud is supported in mycroft-core, but there are some plugins out there that support streaming like vosk
