On the forums in 2019, an employee claimed this, that they were working on direct playing subtitles, and no hardware decoding support (which just seems to be a mistake or I'm misunderstanding, since mpv on android does support hardware decoding. There was a bug for a while, but it was fixed upstream a month ago, and even before then hardware decoding did work (at least since November 2020, from what I'm finding). Maybe there are some rarer formats that ExoPlayer supports and mpv doesn't, but those wouldn't be supported on desktop anyway.
As long as you provide a way to re-link a LGPL library upon request (statically linked or not), it's fine. GPL, AFAIK, won't allow this. Though honestly I'm very surprised the Plex clients are no longer open source. It's incredibly unfortunate. People would jump to improve it because we are tired of waiting. This was done with ExoPlayer, yet now it seems even when ExoPlayer supports the feature entirely, Plex on android will lag behind for several years.
