Command Line Rust is a great book

This page summarizes the projects mentioned and recommended in the original post on /r/rust

Our great sponsors
  • WorkOS - The modern identity platform for B2B SaaS
  • InfluxDB - Power Real-Time Data Analytics at Scale
  • SaaSHub - Software Alternatives and Reviews
  • regex

An implementation of regular expressions for Rust. This implementation uses finite automata and guarantees linear time matching on all inputs.

  • Command-Line Rust taught me how to use crates like clap, assert_cmd, and regex. I felt lost before because I didn't know about Rust's ecosystem--which is arguably as important as the language itself. Also, looking up and comparing libraries is a tiring task! blessed.rs is nice but Command-Line Rust really saved me from analysis paralysis.

  • book

    The Rust Programming Language

  • This is my third Rust book after the official book and Rust in Action. The other two books are great, but they were too theoretical for me. I'm a slow learner and had much trouble grokking Rust's features and idiosyncrasies. When I was done with these books, I was lost and unsure of what I could do.

  • WorkOS

The modern identity platform for B2B SaaS. The APIs are flexible and easy-to-use, supporting authentication, user identity, and complex enterprise features like SSO and SCIM provisioning.

  • advent-of-code-jq

Solving Advent of Code with jq

  • Apart from the books, I went through Google's Comprehensive Rust course and dabbled with Advent of Code.

  • too-many-lists

Learn Rust by writing Entirely Too Many linked lists

  • Advent of Code was okay until I encounterd a problem that required a graph, tree or linked list to solve, where I hit a wall. Most coding exercises are similar--those requiring arrays and hashmaps and sets are okay, but complex data structures are a PITA. (There is an online course dedicated to linked lists in Rust but I couldn't grok it either). IMO you should simply skip problems that you can't solve with your current knowledge level and move on.

NOTE: The number of mentions on this list indicates mentions on common posts plus user suggested alternatives. Hence, a higher number means a more popular project.
