How do people feel about making code edits via web browser

Someone I work with recently found that they could make edits to code in the github.com web browser. After many edits and a, "trust me," I found myself manually resolving merge conflicts (with the gracious help of someone else that had more experience with git).

They aren't using code spaces or github.dev I believe. They are actually using "Edit in place" which is adjacent to those options. The first image in this link might help:
