Another option is Firewalla, or buy a mini PC like it and run pfSense/OPNsense yourself. Two similar concepts, with the cost being either money or your DIY time. A lot of Firewalla users say that it's much easier for home use than pfSense/OPNsense, so you might find it worthwhile to spend a little more on it upfront and have to tinker less.
I also have my parents set up with 4 RT-AC68Us. Two of them are in opposite corners of the house, wired to the main one. The last one is in the window of the steel-sided shop about 75' away. The wired ones are solid, and the wireless one does a good job floating between the others when I take them down for updates or whatever. I'm overall very happy with how AiMesh has worked for them (old house with a thick brick wall through a large portion of the middle). They have seamless Wi-Fi all through the house, and the Asus app makes it easy for them to check on things if anything seems off. I do run Merlin on them, so it may be slightly better than the stock firmware.
