I agree with your point, but wanted to ask, have you considered using a device with a degoogled AOSP-based OS like GrapheneOS or CalyxOS?
whatsapp (at least historically) really likes using its legal team. (i also have faint memories of them going after a linux app that literally just had a web embed to web.whatsapp.com but cannot find the source). now, you may think "oh that's just to prevent spammers and stuff", but what this effectively means is that if your friends use whatsapp, then your choice is limited to android or ios. i think it is actually bad that this duopoly exists and people should not be trying to cement that duopoly even more.
