Re: client-side, that's possible with ZFS as well. Not sure about GUI, but for CLI httm exists, and is great.
Ah gotcha. I can understand building it yourself, it's the best way to learn IMO. Mergerfs merges multiple logical paths together. It looks like it's still maintained and was updated recently.
