NOTE: This repo is unmaintained. See https://github.com/lifelike/pangamebook for a better tool to do this. A markup-language and set of command-line tools for gamebooks or choice-based interactive fiction for print/ebooks or playing in a browser (could be embedded in app).

  • I made a command-line tool for turning text-files into gamebooks (various output formats) that I updated for a few years but abandoned primarily because I felt like the text-format became too complex and too much work to support all the possible features for all possible output formats. (here if you want to have a look). A lot of the complexity comes from things like inventory management, but also because I also invented my own text-format language which was not really a great idea.

  • pandoc

    Universal markup converter

  • When I abandoned that I started thinking about ways to make it simpler (see https://github.com/lifelike/gamebookformat/issues/1). Just recently I wrote a simple filter for Pandoc that just use a regular Markdown file (other formats might work as well, but untested) and changes all headers and links to numbers like in a gamebook. It can generate PDF and EPUB and HTML and a bunch of other formats (even MS Word and Indesign and other weird formats I would never use).

NOTE: The number of mentions on this list indicates mentions on common posts plus user suggested alternatives. Hence, a higher number means a more popular project.
