I literally couldn't believe it, so I started clicking on profiles and realized that 90% of the comments were from people with generic names that had a profile picture that could have been generated by thispersondoesnotexist.com, or more commonly looked like they were stolen from the public profile of an old person. The public profiles almost always had a picture of some landscape, a group of 12+ non-descript old people, and a picture of an older truck. Also if you did a bit of analysis you'd see that every ap newswire article got reposted to the local sites and they all had same comments with small variations posted on every article from different accounts.
