You are correct that day trading in an IRA (or any tax-exempt/tax-deferred space) allows you to avoid short term capital gains taxes (though it also prevents you from writing off losses). You are incorrect if you think day trading is an easy or reliable way to make money. If you are dead set on day trading, I'd at least suggest trying out a trading simulator like this first so you can get a sense of what you're in for.
