On the Raspberry Pi you need some software to manage the controller and the Zigbee network. Home-assistant can control many of these USB based Zigbee controllers directly through the ZHA plugin. I however opted to use zigbee2mqtt, which give you more control, but in turn requires that you have an MQTT broker installed to make it talk to Home-assistant.
