I've been using TextMate, which has been around as long as Notepad++.
What they won't let you do in VSCode is mix "docks" (items which go into sidebars/panels), and "editors" (sections which lets you edit code or text files like JSON). This odd limitation is a confirmed issue. So it's not my imagination... :/
