Project mention: Show HN: NotesOllama – I added local LLM support to Apple Notes (through Ollama) | news.ycombinator.com | 2024-02-21

Another option for hacking something like this together could be HammerSpoon. I’ve spent some time with it, but haven’t tried integrating with Apple Notes, I mostly did stuff at the file system level to keep it easy.

  • Sloth

Mac app that shows all open files, directories, sockets, pipes and devices in use by all running processes. Nice GUI for lsof.

Project mention: Why can't MacOS just TELL ME which program is using the drive I'm trying to eject rather than just have me guess? | /r/MacOS | 2023-07-05

That said, after I learned about how to use lsof, I found this little free app called =Sloth (and its github page ), which is just a nice native Mac app serving as a GUI for lsof. It'll let you know exactly which process to quit or kill so your drive can eject happily.

  • Strongbox

A KeePass/Password Safe Client for iOS and OS X

Project mention: Ask HN: Best Password Manager without cloud login? | news.ycombinator.com | 2024-01-04

I followed a similar path as you did about a year ago. Having tried a bunch of options, I can recommend strongly Strongbox - fantastic native apps for iOS and macOS, with your choice of sync mechanism (local-only is also a first class citizen), and it uses the KeePass file format so you can use your client of choice on other operating systems/no worries about lock-in. Good system integration and autofill extensions. I also appreciated that there was an option for a one-time purchase.

  • mySIMBL

    :package: Plugin manager for macOS

I also miss the icons for drives showing up in the finder window sidebar. Now, all drives' icons are ignored and replaced by generic, OS-assigned icons. Rather than having a visual cue of what to click on, one must read the name. Seems trivial, but it sucks and I hate it.

A couple projects tried to keep the sidebar icons alive using mySIMBL (1) and later MacForge (2) but they've sadly all been abandoned. (I think.) They never really worked all that well, requiring finder-rebooting and various shenanigans to get them to run (if memory serves.)
