If I were starting over, I would get some solenoid water valves I can control from Homebridge or HomeAssistant. I think both of them have an irrigation module that does a lot of the work for you if it can open and close the irrigation valves. This one looked promising but I've not spent the time to get it running because my yard is really too simple to be worth it, and we've gotten plenty of rain lately. https://github.com/MTry/homebridge-smart-irrigation
