Challenges with semantic search on transcribed audio files
I've been trying to solve a problem with implementing semantic search on my YouTube search engine yt-fts (https://github.com/NotJoeMartinez/yt-fts). I've managed to substantially speed up search results by storing subtitle embeddings in Chroma. But a bigger problem has been with how to properly segment the text in a way that accounts for the duration and context of word embeddings while returning precise time stamps. This a blog post exploring what I've tried so far.

Building a semantic search engine for YouTube channels
Hey everyone, I just wanted to share my latest project yt-fts it's a command line tool written in python that allows you to search YouTube videos for keywords. It downloads video transcripts with yt-dlp, parses command line input with click and integrates full text/semantic search with sqlite and openAI python libraries.

Show HN: YouTube Full Text Search – Search all of a channel from the commandline
Thank you! I was able to integrate this into the project[1]. I'm also looking into using your openai-to-sqlite[2] library for semantic search.

I made a python script to search all of a YouTube's subtitles for keywords
If you've ever needed to search a large YouTube channel for keywords, yt-fts (YouTube Full Text Search) is a simple python script that uses yt-dlp to scrape all of a youtube channels subtitles and load them into an sqlite database that is searchable from the command line. It allows you to query a channel for specific key word or phrase and will generate time stamped youtube urls to the video containing the keyword. You can also export these search queries to a csv.

YT shorts are broken, you can't fast-forward or rewind them. What are your workarounds?
ALTERNATIVELY on PC, this is a chrome extension to automatically display YT shorts in a normal, god-intended way on YouTube. It also hides shorts form the home page. As of today (10.09.2023) this extension requires a permission to read and modify all the data on youtube.com and m.youtube.com.

Apollo gone, YouTube full of adds, Twitter dying slowly - everything I use online is going to shit
The one I use is called Auto High Quality for YouTube™. I like it because it has a lot of settings: https://i.imgur.com/CF4tRZE.png and https://i.imgur.com/ksGIYXf.png. And YouTube Shorts Block doesn’t just block shorts, though it has a setting for that. It changes the Shorts video player into the normal desktop video player.

how do i block *.reddit.com from dns resolution, via the OS?
YouTube shorts are irritating. This extension on Chrome doesn't block shorts, but it converts them to the normal video link instead.

YouTube: Sort by oldest is back baby
If you use Chrome, YouTube Shorts Block [1] is a good extension for that.
And while we're talking about extensions to customize your YT experience, here's three more that I really enjoy:
- Clickbait Remover [2], to remove the usually clickbait-ish thumbnails
- Unhook [3], to remove the recommended videos entirely (this helped me reduce the time spent on YT. I browse on my phone, add to watch later, so on desktop I only search or watch what I have previously added to my queue)
- Video Speed Controller [4]. This one is super popular, so probably you already have it installed.

Show HN: YouTube Full Text Search – Search all of a channel from the commandline
This extension does a good job of removing them from your subscription feed. If you like me, guard your feed since you don't want to watch random stuff from the home page this is the only way to not totally clutter the feed with random shorts thumbnails. The very fact you can not disable shorts from your feed is outrageous, but obviously not surprising.
